Press Release - Big Flat Structure Fire
For Immediate Release
Structure Fire Contained Quickly by Missoula Rural Fire District
June 3, 2025
News release prepared by:
Battalion Chief Michael Bowman
At approximately 8:23 a.m. on Tuesday, June 3, 2025, Missoula Rural Fire District (MRFD) was dispatched to a reported structure fire at 3360 Big Flat Road. Neighbors had called 9-1-1 to report smoke coming from the windows and doors of the residence.
Upon arrival, MRFD crews confirmed a working structure fire with smoke visibly issuing from the eaves of a single-wide mobile home. Initial reports indicated the possibility of an occupant still inside the residence. Firefighters quickly initiated an interior attack, simultaneously performing a primary search of the home. The search confirmed that no individuals were inside.
The fire was located in the kitchen area and was successfully contained by fire personnel within 15 minutes of arrival. Additional units on the scene assisted with full extinguishment and overhaul operations.
While no injuries to firefighters or civilians were reported, it is with regret that three house cats were found deceased within the residence.
MRFD responded with two engines, four water tenders, a ladder truck, and two command units. Frenchtown Rural Fire District (FRFD) provided mutual aid with one water tender. In total, 15 firefighters responded to the incident.
Fire investigators were requested and are currently working to determine the cause of the fire. At the time of this release, no official cause has been identified.
The American Red Cross has been contacted and is assisting the homeowner with immediate needs and recovery support. MRFD estimates that crews were able to save approximately $100,000 worth of property and contents. Fire damage to the home is estimated at $40,000.
MRFD extends its sincere thanks to the Missoula County Sheriff’s Office, Frenchtown Rural Fire District, Missoula Emergency Services Inc. (MESI), Missoula Electric Cooperative, and the American Red Cross for their assistance and support at the scene.
