Large Pallet Pile Fire - Desmet Road

News release prepared by:
Battalion Chief Michael Bowman

Missoula Rural Fire District (MRFD) was dispatched at 4:06 a.m. on September 24, 2025, to a report
of pallets on fire off Desmet Road, west of Missoula. The first arriving fire unit found a large
pile of pallets fully involved and additional piles at risk nearby. Due to the size and intensity
of the fire, additional fire units were requested.

MRFD was assisted by the Frenchtown Rural Fire District, which provided critical water supply
support. Over the course of the incident, approximately 100,000 gallons of water were used to
control the fire. Heavy equipment was utilized to spread out burning piles, allowing firefighters
to fully extinguish the material. There were no injuries to civilians or firefighters. The cause of
the fire is currently undetermined.
The response included:

•  4 water tenders
•  3 engines
•  1 ladder truck
•  1 command unit
Most fire units were committed to the incident for more than six hours. An engine and water tender
will remain on scene throughout the day to assist property owners with extinguishing any remaining
hot spots.

The Missoula Rural Fire District extends its thanks to the Missoula County Sheriff’s Office and
Frenchtown Rural Fire District for their assistance and support during this incident.
