MRFD TO PUBLIC:
THANK YOU !
2014 MISSOULA RURAL FIRE DISTRICT
MILL LEVY REQUEST FACT SHEET
Welcome. Find below the "Whats and Whys" of MRFD's mill levy increase request.  Monies would retain career firefighter/ EMT positions.
> Board approval.
The Missoula Rural Fire Districtís (MRFD) Board of Trustees voted unanimously on February 11, 2014 to place the mill levy increase on the May 6, 2014 ballot.
> Amount of mill levy increase requested. If approved, MRFDís mill levy would increase by 10.04 mills.
> Amount to be raised. A 10.04 mill increase will raise approximately $440,766 per year.
> Impact on property owners. For residential property valued at $100,000, approval of the increase would result in an approximately $13.14 annual increase in property tax, or $1.10 per month. On residential property valued at $200,000, the increase would be approximately $26.29 annually, or $2.19 per month. The levy has no durational limit.

> Purpose of funds. Funds will be used to retain six career firefighter/EMTs who were hired in 2012 via funding from a federal staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) Grant. The SAFER Grant is a two-year program that will end September 30, 2014.
After adding the six additional SAFER Grant firefighter/EMTs in 2012, MRFD has been able to regularly dispatch an adequate number of firefighter/EMTs within the initial minutes of an emergency, allowing for a more complete and immediate response to fight fires and save lives. Before those six SAFER Grant firefighter/EMTs were hired, many emergency calls were responded to initially by only one career firefighter/EMT. The funds being requested through the mill levy would be used to retain the six firefighter/EMTs originally hired with SAFER Grant funds, and thus ensure that at least two career firefighter/EMTs will be on duty in each of MRFDís five stations during peak call hours, which are generally 7 AM to 7 PM.
In 2013, MRFD succeeded in achieving a better Insurance Service Office (ISO) rating for property owners in its hydranted areas within five miles of an MRFD or Mutual Aid providerís fire station. (Rating improved from a 5 to a 4). MRFD achieved this improved rating by adding the six SAFER Grant firefighter/EMTs, and by having all of its career firefighter/EMTs increase their work week to 49 hours per week. Many people residing in the Missoula Rural Fire District may see a savings on their fire insurance premiums of anywhere between 3% and 13%. Be sure to contact your insurance company for additional  information.
> Impact if mill levy increase fails. If the mill levy increase request does not pass, we would need to reduce the number of career firefighter/EMTs at all stations, including Station 1 on South Ave, West.
> MRFD mill levy history.
MRFD voters last approved a mill levy increase 22 years ago in 1992.
