Fire
Investigation
The causes of accidental fire vary, but it usually results from the activities of humans or a lightning strike.
The goal of each MRFD fire investigator is to determine the fire's origin and its cause. Prosecution is handled by our law enforcement partners. If you want to learn more about MRFD fire investigations, stop by Station #1...
FINDING THE ORIGIN
When an Incident Commander
on a structural or wildland incident can't immediately figure out the fire cause, the Missoula Rural Fire District (MRFD) relies on the talents and training of its rotating teams of fire investigators.
There are three MRFD fire investigation teams.
Composed of three fire investigators each, the teams rotate responsibilities monthly. Each team member receives ongoing training at the local, state, and national level to do his/her job. They work closely with law enforcement to investigate all "suspicious large loss and incendiary fires," as well as all fire deaths that occur within the District. Team members are also responsible for completing a variety of incident reports and helping to maintain a variety of fire-investigation equipment.
